Overview

The transgender community has made extraordinary visibility gains in recent years, but trans people โ€” particularly trans women of color โ€” continue to face disproportionate rates of violence, discrimination, and poverty. This guide provides resources for trans and non-binary people at every stage of their journey.

๐Ÿ’™ Understanding Trans Identity

1
What does transgender mean?
Transgender describes people whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth. Being transgender is not a mental illness, a phase, a choice, or a disorder. Gender dysphoria (distress from the mismatch between identity and body) is a separate, treatable condition.
2
Non-binary, genderfluid, agender
Non-binary is an umbrella term for gender identities that don't fit the binary of man or woman. Non-binary people may or may not identify as transgender. Genderfluid identities shift over time; agender people identify as having no gender.
3
Pronouns
Common pronouns used by trans and non-binary people include she/her, he/him, they/them, ze/zir, and xe/xem. Using a person's correct pronouns is essential respect.

๐Ÿฅ Medical Transition Information

1
Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)
Hormone therapy is one of the most effective treatments for gender dysphoria. Trans women typically take estrogen; trans men take testosterone. HRT requires ongoing medical supervision.
2
Gender-Affirming Surgery
Various surgical interventions are available (top surgery, bottom surgery, facial feminization, voice surgery, etc.). Surgery is not required to be "truly" transgender. Medical supervision and mental health letters are typically required.
3
WPATH Standards of Care
The World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) publishes internationally recognized standards for gender-affirming care. wpath.org
4
Planned Parenthood / Informed Consent Clinics
Many Planned Parenthood locations in the US offer HRT through an informed consent model โ€” no gatekeeping required.

โš–๏ธ Legal Name & Gender Marker Change

1
USA: Name Change by State
Name change processes vary by state. Generally involves a court petition, publication notice, and court order. Trans.Law/name-change-usa has state-by-state guides.
2
USA: Gender Marker
ID gender markers can be changed on driver's licenses (by state), passports (X marker available since 2022), Social Security (self-certification since 2023), and birth certificates (varies by state).
3
UK: Gender Recognition Certificate
The process in the UK requires two years of living in "acquired gender," medical diagnosis, and a GRC application. Reform has been longstanding advocacy goal.
4
International
Legal gender recognition varies enormously. Malta and Argentina have self-identification models. Many countries require surgery. ILGA World's Trans Legal Mapping Report has country-specific detail.
